Derbyshire and the Peak District offer great houses of international fame such as Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. Historic towns such as Bakewell, Matlock, Derby and Buxton (in Roman times Buxton was known as Aquis Arnemetiae or ‘Sacred groves of the waters’, a name with both Roman and Celtic origins). Further back in time are great stone age and bronze age monuments such as Arbor Low. The natural grandeur and beauty of the area also make the Derbyshire Peak District one of the worlds most popular tourist destinations.
